Caiya Hanks ran fast, Ro’o Torrance-Ellis soared far and Kederang Ueda showed off his endurance.
The usual suspects did their thing at last weekend’s BIIF track and field meet at Keaau, but there has been at least new one name to emerge near the top of the state rankings in recent weeks.
“At HPA, a few weeks back, he killed it,” Waiakea coach Tim Carigon said. “I think everybody came up to me and said, “Who is this kid?”
Enter Waiakea junior Kiyoshi Todd.
After missing parts of the season with robotics and then an illness, Todd has made his mark the past two weeks in the 800 meters, finishing Saturday in a personal-record 2 minutes, 3.71 seconds, which is the third-best time in the state this season.
“It was pretty impressive, because we weren’t sure he was able to do that after missing so much time,” Carigon said. “He’s trying to go sub-2:00 (Saturday at Konawaena), so we’ll see how he does.”
Mid-Pacific’s Parker Wagnild holds the best time in the 800 this season at 2:01.25.
Carigon said Todd has an advantage in the event because he’s a cross-country runner “competing down,” as opposed to a 400 runner trying to make the move up in distance. Doubling in the 400 and 800 is difficult, Carigon said, because the events are scheduled close together.
Todd also complements Ueda in the 1,500. The Waiakea senior ran PRs in both distance events, including a 4:18.51 on Saturday in the 1,50o that ranks only behind Wagnild’s 4:09.78. In the 3,000, Ueda is fifth after crossing in 9:37.46 at Keaau.
Hanks, a Konawaena senior, lowered her state-best time in the 200, finishing in a PR of 25.83. The 12.59 Hanks ran April 9 in the 100 is third in the state.
In the boys triple jump, Torrance-Ellis set a new state seasonal standard, reaching 42 feet, 7.75 seconds. It was only his third try at the event this season, and he’d never cleared 41 feet until Saturday. In the long jump, his effort of 20-11.75 on March 19 remains good enough for fourth.
