During a streak in which it scored 17 consecutive runs, the University of Hawaii baseball team got itself right at UC Riverside.
Junior Kole Kaler became the sixth Rainbow Warrior to hit for the cycle Saturday by posting a single, double, triple and a two-run home run in a 13-4 victory for a doubleheader sweep of the Highlanders.
UH won the first game, 7-0, getting six strong innings from Austin Teixeira.
The streak for the ‘Bows (15-10, 7-8 Big West) began Friday night when they rallied for a 7-5 victory. After losing eight of nine, UH will go for the four-game sweep Sunday. The Highlanders are 4-11 in league play.
Former Waiakea standout Jacob Igawa continues to deliver, driving in four runs in the doubleheader. After Matt Campos broke a scoreless tie in the fifth with a home run, Igawa singled in a run in the sixth and hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Teixeira allowed only five hits and Cade Halemanu allowed only one for a three-inning save. Scotty Scott was 3 for 3 with two RBIs.
UH collected 15 hits in the second game, including two apiece from Igawa, Adam Fogel and Jared Quandt. Igawa hit a two-run double, and Waiakea grad Safea Villaruz-Mauai reached on a walk and hit by pitch and stole a base. Pitching in relief of Logan Pouelsen, Jake Hymal (1-2) worked five solid innings.
On Friday, Igawa had three hits and drove in a run.
No. 1 UH clinches
The top-ranked University ofHawaii men’s volleyball team wrapped up its first Big West Conference regular season titlewith a dominant performance at CSUN, winning 25-20, 25-20, 25-21 at The Matadome.
The Rainbow Warriors (13-0, 8-0) continued their winning ways with their fourth consecutive Big West series sweep and captured their first outright conference regular season since 1980. UH earned the No. 1 seed in the Big West Tournament, which it is hosting at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center, April 22-24.
The win also extended Hawaii’s program-best road win streak to 15 and their overall win streak to 14.
UH’s 13-0 start is tied with the 1996 team for the third-best in school history.
Opposite Rado Parapunov finished with a match-high 15 kills, hitting .407. He moved into sole possession of 11thplace on the school’s all-time kills list and is seven away from breaking into the top 10.
