A Hilo man considered armed and dangerous by police was arrested and charged last week for an array of property and financial offenses.
Gavin Kekoa o‘kalani Calicdan, 29, was charged on Oct. 13 with two counts of first-degree theft, three counts of first-degree criminal property damage, nine counts of unauthorized possession of confidential personal information, and one charge each of unauthorized control of a vehicle, forgery, terroristic threatening, credit card theft, promotion of a dangerous drug, fourth-degree theft and driving without a license.
Calicdan’s charges stem from an incident on Oct. 8, when, shortly before 11 a.m., police officers located a stolen vehicle at an apartment complex on Waianuenue Avenue in Hilo. When officers approached the vehicle, the driver of the stolen vehicle reversed into a police car before speeding forward, striking one of the apartment buildings, and fleeing the seen.
Before the vehicle left, however, police were able to identify the driver as Calicdan. Two other people were seen in the vehicle, identified as Cassidy Taylor Leiali‘i Hess, 23, and Makena Rose Holloway, 26.
The vehicle was found later the same day, along with Hess and Holloway, who were arrested without incident. Calicdan was not located until Oct. 12, when he was found and arrested without incident in Keaukaha.
Calicdan was also in possession of a backpack containing personal and financial documents of a 74-year-old Hilo man who reported that his vehicle was broken into on Oct. 11.
Calicdan’s bail has been set at $227,100. A preliminary hearing was held in Hilo on Oct. 16. His next court appearance is a status conference scheduled for Thursday.
