An alleged stabber and an alleged would-be carjacker were among those making their initial appearances in Hilo District Court on Monday.
In separate cases, Judge Bruce Larson ordered 26-year-old Kailey Kekuluike Vincent of Hilo and 23-year-old Trinton Chavez Canon of Kurtistown to return at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday for preliminary hearings.
According to court documents filed by police, Vincent was at her Kalanianaole Avenue home in Keaukaha drinking at about 3:15 p.m. and an argument broke out with a 21-year-old woman neighbor, who wanted her to stop drinking.
Documents state Vincent poked her finger in the other woman’s face numerous times, then punched her several times, choked her, then bit her on the arm.
When the other woman ran outside, Vincent went to the kitchen, grabbed a six-inch paring knife, stabbed the victim in the right arm and threw the knife — which was later taken into evidence by police — to the ground, according to documents
The victim was treated at Hilo Medical Center for a concussion and a stab wound, documents state.
Vincent, who was sentenced to a year probation in March on a misdemeanor assault conviction, is charged with first-degree terroristic threatening and two counts of first-degree assault. All of the current charges are Class C felonies punishable by up to five years imprisonment, upon conviction.
Terms of Vincent’s probation is that she not possess or use alcohol.
Larson denied a defense request to free Vincent on court-supervised release without monetary bail, but reduced her bail from $15,000 to $6,000 over the objection of the prosecution.
In the other case, Canon is charged with second-degree robbery, unauthorized control of a stolen vehicle, second-degree reckless endangering and two counts of third-degree assault in connection with an alleged attempted carjacking Friday at Hilo Medical Center.
According to court documents filed by police, a 67-year-old man and his 38-year-old wife stopped to help Canon, who was “sprawled out” along the side of the road near the corner of Makuu Drive and 6th Avenue in Hawaiian Paradise Park.
The victims told police Canon told them he wasn’t feeling well and asked them to take him to the hospital, which they did, documents state.
The couple got out of the car to get help from a security guard, who brought a wheelchair to assist, but Canon jumped out of the backseat and grabbed the wheel, according to documents.
Documents state the man went back into the car and struggled with Canon, who was attempting to drive away, and who dragged the car owner about 25 feet before he and the 61-year-old security guard stopped the suspect.
Canon allegedly struck the car owner in the back of the head, and the car owner and security guard were also scratched up from being dragged by the car.
Larson denied a defense request to free Canon on court-supervised release and maintained bail for Canon, who has no prior criminal record in Hawaii, at $8,500.
Second-degree robbery is a Class B felony punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment, upon conviction, while unauthorized control of a stolen vehicle is a Class C felony punishable by up to five years behind bars.
The other charges are misdemeanors.
