Nearly 100,000 Hawaii residents are impacted by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. There are 29,000 residents in the state living with Alzheimer’s disease. That number is expected to rise to an astounding 35,000 by 2025.
With no known cause or cure, Alzheimer’s will continue to impact those with the disease for the foreseeable future.
The Alzheimer’s Association of Hawaii supports caregivers and their families around Hawaii Island with free programs and services. Now offered virtually and by phone, these services include support groups, education classes and seminars, care consultations, referral services and a 24/7 helpline. “Talented musician, devoted mother and caring friend my grandmother, Christina Andrews, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s over a decade ago,” said Renae Akau, 2020 Hawaii Island Walk to End Alzheimer’s chairwoman. “Watching this once strong-willed woman deteriorate mentally has been devastating for our family.
“However, we are grateful for our time with Grandma, and although she may not always remember our names or faces, she always wishes us well and says a prayer for us each time we visit. Many of us have a story, a reason why we support a cause. I am here, along with many volunteers in our community, because of my Grandma and the countless others around the world who have been impacted by this disease. The 2020 Hawaii Island Walk to End Alzheimer’s is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26, at Lili‘uokani Gardens in Hilo.
At present, the association is uncertain if the walk will be conducted in-person or virtually because of the coronavirus pandemic. A decision to proceed with the safest and most appropriate format will be made shortly. Until then, the association will continue to provide support to families, caregivers and everyone impacted by Alzheimer’s and all other forms of dementia.
The walk gives the community the chance to remember those lost, honor dedicated caregivers and commit to putting an end to this disease once and for all.
