A midday Sunday fire caused an estimated $64,000 in damage to a home in the Waiakea Uka area of Hilo.
According to a written Hawaii Fire Department statement, it took the first unit four minutes to arrive from the Haihai Street statement to the home on Alohalani Drive near the Hilo Municipal Golf Course.
Arriving firefighters found people with garden hoses battling the blaze in the single-story post-and-pier home. Heavy fire and smoke was coming from the front of the house, extending to the back of the home.
A live wire was burned through and lying across Alohalani Drive. A Hawaiian Electric unit de-energized the line and removed it. Gasco also responded to remove a propane tank from the scene.
Nine units and 20 firefighters were involved in the response. The fire was reported under control at 1:04 p.m. and extinguished at 1:30 p.m.
No one was injured and an estimated $96,000 worth of property was saved by the quick response.
No cause was listed for the blaze. Fire investigators, police and the Red Cross all responded to the scene.
