The Warriors’ track star scored in the first minute Wednesday at Oahu’s Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex, Kastle Lyman and Nanea Wong Yuen each scored twice and Kamehameha shut out Radford 6-0 in the opening round of the state Division II tournament.
The Warriors (7-4-3) were playing on the opening day of the tournament for the first time in three seasons after losing to six-time state champion Hawaii Prep 7-2 in the BIIF title match.
“We played OK, not the best but happy the girls got a game under their belt to take momentum into (Thursday’s) game,” coach Josh Woodard said.
In the quarterfinals, Kamehameha takes on ILH champion Mid-Pacific (6-4-0) at 3 p.m. Thursday.
Against Radford (4-9-1), the OIA’s No. 3 team, Tabitha Pacheco also scored Wednesday as part of a four-goal spurt during a nine-plus minute span in the second half, and Kaylia Galindo collected the shutout.
The Warriors are looking to reach the final for the fourth time in five seasons. Of course, if they get that far they’ll likely have to contend with top-seeded Ka Makani (11-1), who have a quarterfinal Thursday against Waimea, which beat Sacred Hearts in penalty kicks Wednesday.
