Jorge Martinez started his final week of college soccer off in style Monday night, scoring two goals as UH-Hilo’s men’s soccer team trumped Holy Names 2-0 at the Vulcans’ field.
UHH ended a three-match losing streak and grabbed its third Pacific West Conference victory.
Martinez scored his fifth goal of the season almost a half hour into the match, picking up the remains after a header by Caesar Hjerten glanced off a Hawks defender.
In the 64th minute, Martinez took a pass from Robert George that brought out the keeper, and the Spaniard drilled his sixth goal of the season into the lower left-hand corner of the net.
Goalkeeper Michael Harre made four saves for UHH (4-10, 2-6 PacWest).
Holy Names (4-10-2, 1-6-2) has lost four in row and is above only Academy of Art – which visits UHH on Thursday night – at the bottom of the 12-team conference.
Martinez has produced more than a third of the Vulcans’ goals this season, and the next-highest scorers on the team are George and Pedro Werneck with two apiece.

UHH 3, Holy Names 0: After a scoreless first half, all-Conference sophomore fullback Jodi Lillie’s first two goals for the season came at an opportune time for the Vuls, who ended a four-match scoreless drought by producing their highest-scoring match in almost two months.
The Vulcans (4-7-4, 3-4-2) put 10 of their 20 shots on frame against the last-place Hawks (1-12-3, 1-6-2).
Sandwiched in between Lillie’s goals in the 46th and 73rd minutes – Sabrina Scott assisted on the first one – came Brende Yoshizumi’s first goal of the season.
Bailey Cahill made one save for the Vuls before Ysabela Gabrielle Barin came on and made two in 15-plus minutes of action.
UHH starts Thursday’s doubleheader off against Academy of Art with a 4:30 p.m. contest. The teams tied for seventh in the standings, but each has a chance to finish in the top half of the conference.
