Youth baseball: Hilo Mustangs lose state opener on Oahu

The Hilo Mustang All-Stars lost their opener at the state PONY League baseball tournament for ages 10-under on Saturday in Kapolei, Oahu. With his sons rising through the youth baseball ranks in recent years, coach Chris Honda has seen his share of good teams, and Honolulu’s Kru certainly fit the bill.

The Hilo Mustang All-Stars weren’t too shabby either Saturday, before falling short 8-6 in their state PONY League ages 10-under tournament opener in Kapolei, Oahu.

“(Honolulu) was a very good team with deep pitching,” said Honda, whose team jumped out to a 6-1 lead before Kru started to connected on Hilo’s pitching.

Kysen Honda was 3 for 3 with a triple and pitched two innings, and Krentyn Herolaga was 2 for 3 with a double and also worked two innings. Tycen Baruela went 2 for 3 with a double and Jesse Inouye belted a triple.

Also, Hilo Pinto Black won in the morning but lost its second game of the day was eliminated.

The Mustangs play West Oahu in a elimination Sunday morning, and also taking the field in the winner’s bracket will be the Hilo Mustang 9s and Hilo Pinto White.
