A 35-year-old woman is hospitalized and her 41-year-old husband in custody after a shooting this afternoon in a home on upper Kaiwiki Road in Hilo.
Police Capt. Greg Esteban of the Hilo Criminal Investigation Section said Miya Pumehana Napoleon, also known as Miya Sagucio, “is at Hilo Medical Center being treated for a gunshot wound.” He described her condition as “critical.”
He said police received notice of the shooting at 1:30 p.m. A neighbor, who declined to provide his name, said he was working outdoors and heard several gunshots he thought came from a semi-automatic weapon.
Esteban said the woman’s husband, Corey K. Napoleon, was arrested at 1:50 p.m. arrest on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder. Neighbors, who declined to be identified, said Corey Napoleon had been in and out of the hospital recently and was housebound, with one calling him “extremely obese.”
According to Esteban, officers “are securing the scene while detectives are preparing a search warrant” for a judge’s approval.
Esteban said there were “underage children at the residence.” He added no one else was injured in the incident.
Court records indicate Corey Napoleon has no prior criminal record in Hawaii.
There were indications of trouble in the marriage, as Miya Napoleon was charged on Nov. 24 with misdemeanor domestic abuse. According to the complaint, the victim was Corey Napoleon.
She pleaded not guilty on Feb. 26 and was given trial date of July 1 in Hilo Family Court by Judge Henry Nakamoto.
In addition, both had filed petitions for temporary restraining orders against the other late last year, according to court records.
Corey Napoleon filed twice, on Nov. 27 and Dec. 14. Both petitions were dismissed without prejudice.
Miya Napoleon filed a petition on Dec. 18 on behalf of herself and the couple’s three minor children.
Her petition also was dismissed without prejudice.
