Heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected today, with a 60 percent chance of precipitation around Hilo. Winds from the northwest are expected to gust at as high as 24 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
The Waipio Valley Access Road has been closed due to a landslide. Crews from the Department of Public Works are working to clear debris from the road; no access will be possible until further notice.
At higher altitudes, freezing rain or snow showers are possible for Big Island summits above 12,000 feet, thanks to an interaction of low-level moisture from a previous front and an upper-level air disturbance.
A high wind warning is also in effect at Maunakea and Mauna Loa summits until 6 p.m., with winds expected to reach at least 56 mph and gusts of over 66 mph.
A flash flood watch is in effect across the entire island through this afternoon. Residents are advised to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying areas.
The Maunakea Access Road is currently closed at the 9200 ft. elevation due to the high winds, snow, ice and fog.
