The UH-Hilo men’s basketball team couldn’t have picked a worse night to have its 3-point shooting go missing.
Holy Names hammered the Vulcans 85-61 on Thursday night in Oakland, Calif., leapfrogging the Vulcans in the PacWest standings.
The Hawks (8-11, 7-7 PacWest) jumped to fifth while the Vulcans (7-8, 5-6) fell to seventh with their third straight loss. The top six teams qualify for the PacWest tournament.
James Griffin scored 18 points, Larry Bush had 14, and Kupaa Harrison added 10 points for the Vuls, who shot 2 of 16 from long distance. They made 41 percent on field goals.
Alonzo Taylor came off the bench and scored 22 points, Jewels Sanders added 17 points, Andre Green had 14, and Kyvonte Davis scored 10 points for the Hawks, who shot 52 percent, including 9 of 18 from beyond the arc.
UHH trailed just 35-31 at halftime. But in the second half, the Vuls had a tough time defending. Holy Names shot 65 percent and drained 5 o 6 from 3-point range to outscore UHH 50-30 in the last 20 minutes.
Holy Names outrebounded UHH 34-22 and had just 14 turnovers.
The Hawks bolted to a 23-6 run over seven minutes to command a 73-47 lead in the second half.
Women, Holy Names 59, UHH 55: Allie Navarette scored 21 points, and Alyssa Movchan drilled four 3-pointers and added 12 points but it wasn’t enough for the Vulcans, who dropped their eighth straight.
UH was held to 33 percent shooting from the field, and depth made a difference. The Hawks’ bench outscored the Vuls, 18-8.
The Vuls (4-11, 1-10) trailed 34-25 at halftime.
Taylor Krouse scored 18 points, and Onjalise Carley-Hillard added 17 points for Holy Names (2-18, 2-12), which snapped a nine-game skid.
Baseball
Starting pitcher Dylan Spain, reliever John Kea, and utility player RJ Romo were named to the PacWest preseason team.
Last season as a sophomore, Spain had a 4-7 record with a 3.54 ERA. Kea set a single-season record with nine saves during his redshirt freshman year. He had a 3-2 record and a 3.38 ERA. Romo hit .279 with 23 RBIs and spent time at third base and designated hitter.
The Vulcans, who went 21-27 last year, were selected to finish seventh in the nine-team PacWest.
