Roadwork on Kalanianaole Avenue is a little behind schedule.

Preparatory work on the two-year road project began in March.

Barett Otani, an executive assistant for Mayor Harry Kim, said the work will widen Kalanianaole Avenue from Kanoelehua Avenue to Kuhio Street, or the Hilo Harbor entrance, as well as add a sidewalk on the makai side, a paved shoulder on the mauka side, bicycle lanes and one through-lane in each direction, and a shared turn lane.

The project also calls for the installation of a new 12-inch diameter water line.

A joint project between the county and the state Department of Transportation, Otani said that the road-widening phase is progressing, though at times it has been slowed due to conflicts with underground utilities.

To date, however, the project schedule has been extended about 1 1/2 months due to inclement weather.

According to Otani, the total cost of the project is nearly $17.1 million.

With waterline work, the project is expected to be complete in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Goodfellow Bros. LLC is the general contractor on the project.

“The County of Hawaii Department of Public Works thanks the community for their patience and understanding,” Otani said.
