Police said this afternoon that they are investigating the Wednesday evening death of a 6-year-old boy, describing the death as “suspicious.”

At about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to a call at the Kailua Fire Station. The boy, who police say was unconscious, was taken to the fire station by family members. The child reportedly was involved in an incident at an apartment complex in the 74-900 block of Manawalea Street in Kailua-Kona.

The child was taken by ambulance to Kona Community Hospital and was pronounced dead at about 5:30 p.m.

Police say the child’s injuries weren’t consistent with an accident, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Potential witnesses are being sought, and are asked to call the police non-emergency number at 935-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.
