President Donald Trump approved the state’s request for a major disaster declaration for areas affected by Hurricane Lane.
The declaration, announced Thursday in a statement from the White House, authorizes federal agencies to assist the state’s recovery efforts.
The declaration provides federal funding to local governments and some private organizations to help recover from storm damage on the Big Island, Maui and Kauai.
Lane did not directly hit Hawaii, but heavy rains caused widespread flooding in the state. Portions of East Hawaii received about 50 inches of rain during a four-day period in late August.
“I need the entire FEMA organization to know how grateful we are to them for coming to our aid,” said Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim in a statement.
Gov. David Ige said in a statement that the approval from the feds will help the state recover more quickly.
“We are grateful for their support as we continue our work to keep our residents and visitors safe,” he said.
Another request for individual federal aid is still being considered.
The declaration also provides some funding for future “hazard mitigation measures” in the islands.
