Second deadly police shooting in a week in Honolulu
HONOLULU — For the second time in a week, Honolulu police shot and killed a man.
Police say two officers fired at the man after he lunged at them with a knife outside a grocery store in Kalihi.
Police were called to respond to a gas station to investigate a theft early Thursday. Officers encountered the suspect in front of a nearby Foodland, where he threatened them with a knife.
Officers told the man to stop before shooting him. The man, in his 40s, was taken to a hospital where he died.
On Oct. 20, police shot and killed a man while executing a drug search warrant at an apartment near Waikiki. Police say the man pointed a handgun at an officer, who fired a rifle.
Man charged in mother’s death declared fit
LIHUE, Kauai — A man accused of stabbing his mother to death while she was working at a bank on Kauai was declared fit for trial.
Louis Landsman pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Charlene Landsman, 69, in May.
Defense Attorney Melinda Mendes requested in June that her client undergo an examination to determine his fitness for legal proceedings. The court granted the request, consulting three experts.
Police say Landsman, 49, attacked his mother with a large hunting-style knife while she was working at the First Hawaiian Bank in Lihue. He visited the bank three times May 17, according to prior witness testimony.
After the first visit, Charlene Landsman told co-workers to call police if her son came back, a witness previously told the court. Charlene Landsman canceled the request when he returned. The stabbing happened on the third visit.
Trial is scheduled for February. Louis Landsman is being detained on $1 million bond.
Housekeeper at hotel says guest assaulted her
HONOLULU — A housekeeper at a Honolulu hotel says she was assaulted by a guest after she could not open the door to an adjoining room.
Jackelyn Bautista says she told the man at the Royal Hawaiian hotel last week that she would call security to open it, but he grabbed her hand twice and tried to pull her back into the room.
Bautista says she was disappointed by management’s lack of support after reporting the encounter to hotel security and police. The hotel said in a statement that it cannot discuss the incident because of confidentiality issues, but it has safety measures to protect employees.
Bautista is a member of the Unite Here Local 5 union, which is engaged in contract negotiations with hotel owner Marriott International.
