All skill levels are welcome at Volcano Art Center’s ceramic studio, where students will work with stoneware clay and high-fire reduction glazes as part of the returning Sunday Clay — High Fire! workshops.
Teaching artist Erik Wold will provide instruction, including demonstrations of wheel throwing methods, and will be available for individualized assistance. Those new to clay will be guided step-by-step through the basics of using the potter’s wheel or hand-building techniques. Continuing students and those with previous experience are encouraged to develop their skills and are welcome to pursue more advanced directions with the instructor’s helpful input.
Informal discussion about topics ranging from sources of creative inspiration to various pottery styles and traditions from around the world will supplement this hands-on learning experience.
Seven registration slots are open to “wheel throwers,” and two additional places will be open to “hand-builders.” Beginners and continuing students are welcome.
Sunday Clay – High Fire! is an eight week workshop. The morning session is from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. with afternoon sessions from 2:45-5:45 p.m. on Sundays from Aug. 5-Sept. 30. There is no class Aug. 12.
Cost for either session is $200 or $180 for VAC members plus a $15 materials fee for 6 pounds of clay, which includes glazes and firing for that material. Additional clay will be available for purchase.
Open studio time will be available to registered students from 2-5 p.m. Wednesdays. Cost is $10 per day, with tickets available at the VAC administration office front desk during regular business hours. You must be registered for a ceramics class to participate.
Wold is a full-time potter living in Volcano Village. He is a member of the Volcano Village Artists Hui and sells his wares regularly on Saturdays at Hilo Farmers Market and Sundays at the Cooper Center farmers market in Volcano. He studied ceramics at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, graduating in 1993.
