Wailoa Center and the Hawaii Island Art Alliance invite artists in the community to submit portfolios for consideration for their third 10x10x10 Artist Challenge scheduled for May 2019.

Ten artists will be chosen for the Challenge and have roughly one year to develop their ideas and create an installation of art to be displayed in one of 10 sectioned-off spaces upstairs in the Main Gallery of Wailoa Center.

Once an artist is chosen and commits to the process, the 10 mandated materials will be revealed to the artists and they can only use those materials to create their installation.

That is the challenge — 10 artists, 10 spaces and 10 materials.

Artist collaboration teams consisting of two artists (no more than two) also will be accepted for consideration. Portfolios should include a body of work that reflects the artist’s style, ability to use different materials and a short statement on why they would like to participate in this exhibit. Installation art does not have to be shown in the portfolio; just show a desire to be open to it and commitment to the challenge.

Portfolios can be dropped off at Wailoa or preferably submitted through email at wailoa@yahoo.com. The deadline for portfolio submissions is May 31. The 10 artists will be notified shortly after review and be asked to sign a contract of commitment to exhibit.

Wailoa and HIAA plans to introduce the chosen artists and reveal the material list during the June 1 MidSummer Art Celebration artist reception.

Artists interested in applying for the 2019 Challenge or know of an artist who might be interested can contact Codie King at Wailoa Center 933-0416 or email wailoa@yahoo.com.
