Business as usual at Hilo VA clinic

Any veterans needing an appointment can call the toll-free call center at 800-214-1306.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Hilo who are affected by the recent Kilauea Volcano eruptions and earthquakes,” said Jennifer Gutowski, director VAPIHCS. “Our priority is the safety and well-being of our staff and veterans.”

Boy Scout rises to rank of Eagle

Hilo Boy Scout Jonah Dakujaku was awarded the rank of Eagle in March during a Court of Honor ceremony.

Dakujaku’s Eagle Scout service project benefited United Community Church, the location of Troop 19’s weekly meetings. Seeing the need for a safer path to the church’s rear parking lot, Dakujaku and his team of Scouts, parents and volunteers cleared the area, poured a 32-foot-long concrete walkway, installed hand railings and fitted the church with LED motion-sensor lights.

Dakujaku is a 2017 graduate of Waiakea High School. He is learning the contracting trade with the family business, C. Dakujaku Contracting, with hopes to run the business in the future. He is the son of Conrad and JoAnne Dakujaku of Hilo.

Glenn Sako serves as the scoutmaster of Troop 19. The Troop is chartered by the Waiakea Lions Club and supported by UCC.
