World views: Photography club meeting to feature images from global organization

Award-winning images from the Photographic Society of America and information about legal guidelines for shooting in a public space will highlight the next Hilo Photography Club meeting at 7 p.m. May 16 at the Kamana Senior Center.

The Photographic Society of America is one of the largest, worldwide, nonprofit organizations of its kind. Established in 1934, it has members in more than 75 countries ranging from amateur to professional.

Vijay Karai, Hilo Photography Club president, will show more than 100 images from a PSA-sponsored international exhibition and discuss some of the distinguishing features of those images. The topics of discussion will be the quality of light, composition and the ability of modern photography to impact individuals and society.

The second presentation of the evening by club member Mary Konczyk will discuss the legality of public space, including what is allowed to be published under the rule of law and the requirement of a model release. While not a legal treatise, this should provide a guideline for those who are interested in street photography and the implications of posting such images online or making them available in print.

The Hilo Photography Club meets the third Wednesday of each month at the senior center, located at 127 Kamana St. in Hilo. Admission is free and light refreshments are served at intermission.

The membership includes photographers of all ages ranging from beginner to professional. Club activities include monthly meetings, photography field trips and workshops. Memberships are $15 per year.
