The first round of the Pacific West tennis championships went as easy as expected for the top-seeded UH-Hilo men.

The No. 9-ranked Vulcans (15-1) needed only five matches to defeat Biola on Thursday in Surprise, Ariz., advancing to the semifinals in Surprise, Ariz.

“It was a good start,” Vulcans coach Tina McDermott said in a release. “Every match is tough, and we will have to come back out tomorrow ready to play again.”

UHH will take on Concordia – which beat Sonoma State 5-4 – at 10:30 a.m. Hawaii time Friday.

Against Biola (6-14), Gregory Zukeran and Chun En Wu were the first team to get the Vulcans on the board on court three with an 8-2 win. Bruno Figlia and Alex Fillat Perez picked up the win on court two and the No. 1 team of Vaclav Slezak and Alessandro Giuliato won their match, 8-4.

Giuliato was the first singles player to pick up a win on court two, defeating Derek James, 6-3, 6-3. Fillat Perez followed with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Joe Turnquest on court four to seal the verdict. Arturo Dell`eva and Wu just one game away from also winning their matches.

UHH women close with win

Senior Sara Marin finished her career with wins in singles and doubles as the Vuls beat Holy Names 5-0 in the consolation bracket, closing an 8-10 season.

Marin won 6-1, 6-0 in No. 3 singles and teamed with Irena Le for a triumph at No. 3 doubles 8-2.

Daniela Sanz and Devanshi Bhimjiyani won in No. 1 doubles (8-4) and Marina Colvee and Carmelle Joyner did the same on court two (8-2).
