Fulbright scholars to lecture at Hawaii Community College

The Hawaii Community College International Education Committee is hosting Fulbright scholars from India and Turkey who will present free lectures this week in Kaneikeao (Building 379-1) on the Manono campus in Hilo.

India filmmaker and artist Soudhamini, a filmmaker and artist from India, will present “Virtual Reality: New Possibilities for Storytelling” at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Soudhamini began her professional career assisting avant-garde filmmaker Mani Kaul and since then has been working across platforms and genres making short fiction, feature length non-fiction and installation works. She has received commissions from the government of India as well as international institutions.

Her works lie at the cusp of cinema and other forms of traditional and indigenous culture in South India including music, poetry, performance and ritual.

Soudhamini has a masters in English literature from Stella Maris College, Madras, and a postgraduate diploma in film direction from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.

Seniye Vural, an assistant professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at Erciyes University in Turkey, will present a “Self-Regulated Learning: Students are Controllers of Their Learning Process, Not the Victims of It!” at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Vural’s research areas include teacher and student motivation, teacher education, teacher and student self-regulation, curriculum development and evaluation of English language programs, and English as a Lingua Franca.

She holds master’s degree in English literature from Erciyes University, another master’s degree in teaching English as a second language from Bilkent University and a doctorate in the same field from Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey.

She was a Fulbright student researcher in 2012-13 at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and currently is a Fulbright scholar-in-residence at Pima Community College in Tucson, Ariz.
