A 41-year-old Holualoa woman died early this morning from injuries she sustained in a three-vehicle crash Monday evening near the 83-mile marker of Queen Kaahumanu Highway in North Kona.
Police identified her as Trina Walker.
Officers responding to a 10:39 p.m. call determined that the driver of a southbound 2002 Volvo sedan rear-ended a southbound 2014 Volkswagen sedan driven by Walker. This collision caused the Volkswagen to spin and cross into the northbound lane of the highway, where the Volkswagen was then rear-ended by a northbound 2013 Honda sedan.
Walker was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 2:57 a.m.
The 21-year-old man driving the Volvo was also taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he’s currently listed in stable condition.
The 31-year-old Waimea man driving the Honda was treated and released at North Hawaii Community Hospital.
Police believe speed was a factor in the collision, but don’t yet know if alcohol was involved.
A negligent homicide investigation has been opened and anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Officer Justin Hooser at 326-4646 ext. 229.
Walker’s death is the sixth traffic fatality this year compared to four at this time last year.
