Damage from recent heavy rains at the Waiohinu Solid Waste Transfer Station will not prevent residents from disposing garbage there, but users will have to take precautions.

Because of damage to a retaining wall, visitors to the site will not be able to back their vehicles directly to the waste disposal chute. Users are asked to bag their waste and carry it to the chutes until further notice.

The county Department of Environmental Management asks that users not overfill their garbage bags to make them easier to carry.

Meanwhile, plans for a new facility at Waiohinu are underway, but construction is not expected to be complete for at least nine months.
