Works of wood: Isaacs Art Center hosting guild’s annual exhibit

An opening reception for the Hawaii Wood Guild’s Masters Invitational Exhibit is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Jan. 13 at Isaacs Art Center in Waimea.

For more than 30 years, the Hawaii Wood Guild has been coordinating public exhibits of members’ works and this year’s exhibit is not to be missed. Works can be viewed from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday until Feb. 23.

The exhibit showcases 17 guild members presenting 42 pieces of their finest and most recent work. Entries range from small hollow vessels to large pieces of furniture — functional to whimsical — with everything in between. All of the works are available for purchase with 25 percent of all proceeds going to the Hawaii Preparatory Academy scholarship fund.

“We grateful to the Isaacs Art Center for allowing us to have our 32nd annual Masters Invitational Exhibit in this amazing gallery,” said Hawaii Wood Guild president Marcus Castaing.

“Displayed against a backdrop of contemporary paintings by such legends as Herb Kane, Madge Tennent, Lloyd Sexton and D. Howard Hitchcock, the works of wood art are in extraordinary company,” Castaing said.

The Hawaii Wood Guild is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization for woodworkers and wood enthusiasts on Hawaii Island.

The guild’s mission is to promote awareness and appreciation for Hawaii’s talented woodworkers and the trees and woods they use to create with.

Since their livelihoods rely on Hawaii’s urban and forest trees, the goal of guild members is to bring awareness to good forest stewardship through an alliance with the Hawaii Forest Industry Association, Castaing said.

Every Saturday, several guild members will be at the gallery throughout the day to answer questions and talk story about working wood and growing trees.
