Christmas Jazz Special at VAC
The Volcano Art Center’s 2017 Jazz in the Forest series continues with two Christmas Jazz Special performances at 4:30 and 7 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 9) featuring Jeannine Guillory and Jean Pierre Thoma and the Jazztones.
New arrangements of traditional carols will be presented in Latin, swing, bossa, gospel, salsa and romantic and operatic versions by Guillory and The Jazztones.
The Wine and Beer Room will be open for attendees to enjoy pupus and beverages before and after the concert, and an area will be set aside for dancing.

New date set for
‘Mana Wahine’
The Okareka Dance Company’s presentation of “Mana Wahine” at the University of Hawaii at Hilo Performing Arts Center has been rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. Feb. 2.
Tickets purchased for October’s postponed performance will be applied to the Feb. 2 date.

Theater screening Takei musical
Fathom Events and Sing Out, Louise! Productions presents the return of the George Takei’s groundbreaking musical “Allegiance on Broadway” at the Regal Prince Kuhio 9 theaters.
Inspired by the true-life experience of its star Takei, “Allegiance” follows one family’s extraordinary journey in this untold American story following the events of Pearl Harbor. Filipina singer and actress Lea Salonga co-stars. Also featured are exclusive cast interviews and footage honoring the 442nd Regimental Combat Team.
Remaining showtimes are 12:55 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 9) and 7:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday (Dec. 11-12).
W.H. Shipman House tour slated
The public is invited to a unique and festive opportunity to tour the historic W.H. Shipman House from 2-5 p.m. Dec. 16 at 131 Kaiulani St. in Hilo.
The Victorian-style home is decked out with Christmas decorations throughout the main rooms on the lower level. Small group tours with a knowledgeable docent will be set up in 30-minute segments and includes live music and light refreshments.
Tickets are limited and cost $15 — cash only and tax deductible — per person. All proceeds will be given to the historic Haili Church in downtown Hilo. Walk-ups on the tour day are welcome, but are subject to space availability. Guests must park at Haili Church, 211 Haili St., and use the free shuttle to and from the home.
