During the week of Sept. 18-24, Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents and three were younger than 21.

During the week of Sept. 18-24, Hawaii Island police arrested 24 motorists for DUI. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents and three were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, eight; South Hilo and Puna, six each; South Kohala, two; Hamakua and North Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 849 DUI arrests compared with 793 during the same period last year, an increase of 7.1 percent.

There have been 973 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,020 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.6 percent.

There have been 26 official fatalities compared with 21 for the same period last year, an increase of 23.8 percent. There also have been four vehicle-related deaths not counted toward the official total because two were on private property and two in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide
