Current, former and prospective members as well as other interested people are invited to join the League of Women Voters of Hawaii County to hear Patricia “Pat” Tummons, editor of Environment Hawai‘i, speak during the league’s meeting at 11 a.m. Sept. 8 at the Regency at Hualalai in Kailua-Kona.

The LWV-Hawaii County meeting starts with registration at 9:45 a.m. and a welcome and call to order for the general meeting at 10.

Tummons’ talk, “Twenty-seven Years of Environmental Reporting in Hawai‘i,” will start promptly at 11 a.m.

Tummons is a native of southwest Missouri. She graduated from the University of Buffalo with majors in history and philosophy, then earned an MA in philosophy.

She was on the staff of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and in 1985 was one of six visiting Gannett fellows at the University of Hawaii, where she was awarded a certificate in Asian studies.

She moved permanently to Hawaii in 1989 and a year later co-founded the publication, Environment Hawai‘i, which has won national, state and local awards in areas such as business and trade reporting, editorial writing and investigative reporting. Tummons now resides in Hilo with her husband, Don, and two Labrador retrievers.

A no-host buffet luncheon follows her talk at about noon. The cost of $11 is payable by cash or check to LWVHC at the door. The Regency is located at 75-181 Hualalai St.
