DLNR to discuss rising sea levels

Rising sea levels will be the topic of discussion during a meeting Thursday in Hilo.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources will discuss the impacts of rising oceans and gather comments regarding preparedness and adaptation.

The meeting will be from 6-8 p.m. at the Aupuni Center Conference Room, 101 Pauahi St.

Water study meeting in Hawi

A meeting about the North Kohala Agricultural Water Study is scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Hawi. The meeting will take place at the Kohala Village Hub Barn, 55-514 Hawi Road.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources is conducting the study to identify current and future demands and evaluate potential new water sources.

State Sen. Lorraine Inouye will attend.

Cabral family reunion planned

From the Acores, Joao Lazarus Cabral and Maria Jose Lazaro Cabral traveled years ago on the S.S. Bell Rock some 15,000 miles for three months to Terra Nova, the New Land, to work on the sugar plantations of Waiakea, Pepeekeo, Wainaku, ‘Ola‘a, Onomea, Kaiwiki and others towns.

A Cabral family reunion is planned for Aug. 26 in Volcano.

Those who think they are part of the Cabral family and have lost touch are encouraged to attend: Cabral, Oliveira, Rodrigues, Carreira, Pavao, de Lima, Pires, Andrade, Pacheco, de Reis, Serrano, Farias and others.

Waiakea High open house set

The Waiakea High School Parent Teacher Student Association will host the school’s annual open house beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday in the school cafeteria.

A brief PTSA meeting will be held with a limited supply of free chili bowls being served. Classroom visitations will follow. School logo apparel and items will be available for purchase in Room E-103.

Yoga workshops slated in Hilo

Balancing Monkey Yoga in Hilo welcomes guest instructor Desiree Rumbaugh, who will visit the Big Island Aug. 25-27 for a weekend of healing and empowering asana and lively application of yogic teachings.

The weekend includes five 2 1/2-hour workshops starting at 2:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
