Hawaii Community Correctional Center in Hilo was placed on temporary lockdown status Tuesday morning.

Hawaii Community Correctional Center in Hilo was placed on temporary lockdown status Tuesday morning.

According to a written statement from the Department of Public Safety, pre-trial detainee Keanu Krause attempted to escape by scaling a perimeter fence while being escorted to his housing unit.

Guards reportedly were able to get the 21-year-old Krause off the fence and restrain him and no further incidents occurred.

Krause was evaluated by medical staff for some minor abrasions, according to the statement.

“The staff’s immediate response to the situation prevented an escape,” said Public Safety Director Nolan Espinda. “I commend them for their quick reaction and a job well done.”

According to the statement, the lockdown was initiated after the incident and lifted about an hour later.

An internal investigation is underway, and an attempted escape charge is being filed with the Hawaii Police Department.

Krause is awaiting trial on charges of felony theft, burglary, unauthorized entry to a motor vehicle and unauthorized control of a stolen vehicle.
