During the week of July 31-Aug. 6, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents and one was younger than 21.

During the week of July 31-Aug. 6, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents and one was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, nine; Puna, five; and South Hilo, South Kohala and Hamakua, one each.

So far this year, there have been 689 DUI arrests compared with 635 during the same period last year, an increase of 8.5 percent.

There have been 794 major accidents so far this year compared to 864 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.1 percent.

To date, there have been 21 official traffic fatalities compared with 15 official fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 40 percent for official fatalities. There also have been four vehicle-related deaths this year not counted by police toward the official total because two occurred on private property and the other two in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
