Were you ever curious about how to play bridge? The Hilo Bridge Club is hosting the Alzheimer’s Association Longest Day Bridge-athon from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. today at the Eagles Club in Keaau in honor of caregivers on Hawaii Island.

Hilo Bridge Club manager Harry Messenheimer said the event will include an introduction to bridge and its benefits, a demonstration of actual play, regular games and question and answer sessions.

Interested spectators and potential bridge players are welcome to come throughout the day. Information about how to take care of your brain will be available from the Alzheimer’s Association.

Volcano Rotary to induct officers

The Rotary Club of Volcano will induct officers and its board of directors during a ceremony and dinner at 5 p.m. Sunday at Kilauea Military Camp in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Assuming club leadership positions are George “Bev” Garrett, president; Bill Hamilton, president-elect; Carol Hamilton, secretary; and Paul Field, treasurer.

The Rotary Club of Volcano is devoted to making the Volcano community a better place for all.

Hazard readiness events offered

State Rep. Mark Nakashima, D-Hamakua, North Hilo, South Hilo, invites residents to free hazard preparedness events this week.

They include:

• 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday at Ernest B. de Silva Elementary School cafeteria, 278 Ainako Ave. in Hilo.

• 9-11:30 a.m. Saturday at Honokaa Intermediate and High School cafeteria, 45-527 Pakalana St. in Honokaa.

Attendees will learn about the 2017 hurricane season, emergency supplies, evacuation, insurance and home retrofits.

KS alumni luau funds scholarships

Kamehameha Schools Alumni Association-East Hawaii Region is hosting its eighth annual college scholarship fundraiser luau from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. July 15 at the Ha‘aeamahi dining hall on the Keaau campus.

There will be entertainment, a silent auction and ono Hawaiian food.

Proceeds from the luau will provide scholarships for Hawaiian students attending the University of Hawaii at Hilo or Hawaii Community College. Tickets are $20 each and available for purchase by contacting Roy Alameida at 756-4574 or Nat Chang at 895-1390. Tickets must be ordered by July 6. Donations also will be accepted.
