Research proves that social dancing is among the best ways to maintain brain health — and it’s also great fun and exercise.

Research proves that social dancing is among the best ways to maintain brain health — and it’s also great fun and exercise.

That’s why the Hilo Hep Cats swing dancers, the Hilo Elks Lodge and several East Hawaii dance organizations are joining the Alzheimer’s Association Aloha Chapter for a Dance-abration from 7-11 p.m. June 17 at the Hilo Elks Lodge.

Participants not only will be donating to support the Alzheimer’s Association’s commemoration of the Longest Day, a national observance in honor of caregivers, but they’ll be able to watch and participate in mini-lessons of a variety of different dance styles.

There is $15-$20 (sliding scale) entry fee; additional donations are appreciated. All ages are welcome (children 12 and younger are free), and no partner or experience is needed.

Andrea Gill of the Hilo Hep Cats will kick off the evening with a lesson in lively 1920s Charleston, followed by Big Island Ballroom Dance Club instructors Lorna Young and Wyatt Lotz, who will introduce the Caribbean rhythms of bachata.

Lon and Carol Hocker and the Kolohe Folk Dancers will invite everyone to try some popular folk dances from around the globe. End the evening with a lesson in smooth and elegant cross-step waltz, taught by Andolie Marten.

In addition to the demonstrations and mini-lessons, there will be music suitable for a wide variety of dancing, including swing, nightclub two-step, foxtrot, rock ‘n’ roll and more.

Funds raised at the Dance-abration will help support the Aloha Chapter’s activities.

The Hilo Elks Lodge, the event sponsor, is at 150 Kinoole St. Park in the rear off Ululani Street and take the stairs to the dance hall. The Elks is a non-smoking venue.
