A propane gas leak caused by a hit-and-run car crash closed a portion of Kalanianaole Avenue in Hilo for more than an hour Wednesday morning.

A propane gas leak caused by a hit-and-run car crash closed a portion of Kalanianaole Avenue in Hilo for more than an hour Wednesday morning.

According to the Police and Fire departments, a car hit a gas line just off the main road in Hilo’s Keaukaha area near Keaa Street. According to a written Fire Department statement, seven units responded to a 6:05 a.m. alarm to find the broken gas line, which services Ocean Front Kitchen restaurant.

The Fire Department said there were no injuries in the traffic collision.

Traffic was detoured through Keaa and Silva streets. According to Civil Defense, traffic on Kalanianaole was reopened in both directions by 7:10 a.m.

Fire Battalion Chief Michael Hayashida said the leak was repaired and nearby businesses were allowed to open by 8 a.m.
