During the week of March 20-26, police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident.

During the week of March 20-26, police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; Puna, five; South Hilo, four; and South Kohala, two.

There have been 313 major accidents so far this year compared to 347 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.8 percent.

To date, there have been seven official traffic fatalities compared to five at this time last year. This represents an increase of 40 percent for fatalities. There have also been three traffic-related deaths that do not count toward the official total because two occurred on private property and another in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
