Hui Malama Ola Na ‘Oiwi will host a free health and wellness event from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Dec. 10 at the ILWU Hall, 100 W Lanikaula St. in Hilo.

The “Live Longer and Feel Better” event will feature tips for healthy living through a local-style approach for all ages.

Community supporters Keahi Tajon of Umauma Fruit and Flowers, Lorna Puailihau, Kaohu Monfort-Chang, Mailelaulani Canario and Uncle Sam and Auntie Edna Baldado will provide cultural demonstrations about poi pounding, la‘au lapa‘au (medicinal plants), hula ola, kalo (taro) lessons and more.

Those who attend will have an opportunity to get free health screenings to check their vision, blood pressure, blood sugar and height/weight/BMI offered by the Vision Van and students of the University of Hawaii at Hilo School of Nursing and the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy.

There also will be lucky number drawings for plants and other items.

“It is always good to check on our health because things can change at any time,” said Wanda Louis, RN, community health educator at Hui Malama Ola Na ‘Oiwi. “It is important to get regular checkups, maintain a healthy lifestyle and have good support in our lives to help us live better.”
