The Hilo Quilters, formerly known as the Hilo Horizon Quilt Club, made a generous donation of handmade quilts to Hospice of Hilo’s Pohai Malama a Harry &Jeanette Weinberg Care Center.

The Hilo Quilters started in 2005 as the brainchild of Yvonne Egdamin and Nancy Yoshimura, with Marian Kuruhara and Kathy Takehiro as collaborators, with the goal of learning new skills, techniques and appreciation for the craft of quilting.

“Hospice of Hilo was selected because we knew of a few people that had someone under hospice care, or some connection, and thought it would be the perfect place that could use a quilt to cheer and make them feel ‘warm,’” said club member Audrey Haraguchi.

Completed in 2012, Hospice of Hilo’s 14,140-square-foot care center, the only one of its kind in Hawaii outside of Oahu, is a Medicare-certified facility featuring 12 private suites, each with its own lanai that looks out onto the garden.

“We are so very grateful for the Hilo Quilters and their beautiful gifts,” said Hospice of Hilo CEO Brenda S. Ho.

“It’s wonderful to live in a community where people with shared values come together and where quality of life matters.”

Hospice of Hilo provides specialized comfort care for patients facing a life-limiting or serious illness. Services are delivered to patients in their place of residence or at the Pohai Malama care center. In addition to hospice services, Hospice of Hilo also provides bereavement counseling.
