The skinny: Facing Division I competition last Saturday, Anna Baker-Mikkelsen set the pace for UH-Hilo again, finishing 70th at the 42nd annual Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational in Oregon.
Baker-Mikkelsen completed the 6K in 19:32. Ashlyn Cabatbat was the next Vulcan (173, 23:15), and Reyna Garcia Lopez (23:27.8), Kaylee Rapoza (23:42.4) and Cheyana
Crossman also ran for UH-Hilo. Each runner had a season-best and Cabatbat, Garcia and Crossman had personnel-bests.
Quotable: “I liked how the our 2-5 runners were close to each other as Coach Jaime (Guerpo) and I have been encouraging them to use each other to maximize there performance,” assistant coach Alan Ryan said. “I was most impressed with Cheyana’s performance. She has come a long way from the beginning of the season and is up with the rest of the team. A few seconds faster and she would be our No. 2 runner. I wouldn’t be surprised if she gets there in three weeks at our conference championships.”

The skinny: Waiakea graduate Andi Igawa is the lone returnee for the Vulcan women. A junior, she averaged over 80 strokes a round last year, playing mostly at UHH’s No. 2 spot. She inherits the No. 1 role this year, vacated by four-year letterwinner Kristen Sawada, who was a Third-Team All-Pacific West Conference honoree last season.
Quotable: “I look for a big year from Andi,” said Jim DeMello, who started the Vulcan women’s program in 2004 after assisting with the men’s team for many years. “Equally important is that the rest of the team works hard and improves throughout the year. Your team is only as good as your fourth and fifth players.”

The skinny: After rushing for 344 yards, including a career-high 205 by Diocemy Saint Juste, Hawaii seeks its first 2-0 conference start since 2010 and it can also match its win total from last season.
Quotable: “We’re picking up where we left off,” Saint Juste said Tuesday. “We’re improving our pass (protection), we’re improving our blocking, improving everything. I feel like were going to a do a good job.
“I’’m just glad we’re not strictly a passing team and we’re kind of balanced at this point. Me and the other running backs are really enjoying this.”
