Hilo-based Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center was among the recipients of the Hawaii State Bar Foundation’s grant awards for 2016.
The grants, totaling more than $40,000, were awarded to increase the public understanding of the law, improve the Hawaii justice system and facilitate the statewide access and delivery of legal services to the public, the foundation said.
The Bar Foundation is a charitable organization that supports the Hawaii State Bar Association and its mission to promote justice and improve the legal profession. For more information, visit hsba.org.
The 2016 grant recipients and why they were awarded:
• Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center
Continuation of access to mediation services for the resolution of family issues after separation and in foreclosure actions.
• Big Island Mediation Inc. (West Hawaii Mediation Center)
Help sustain and continue community and foreclosure mediation programs.
• Hawaii Innocence Project, William S. Richardson School of Law
Allows the program to continue to serve selected clients wrongfully imprisoned.
• Mediation Services of Maui Inc.
Provision of basic and advanced mediation training for adults, and conflict resolution training for island Boys and Girls Clubs.
• Lanai Community Health Center
Assist in the establishment of a medial legal partnership for the provision of needed island services.
• Volunteer Legal Services of Hawaii
Establishment of an online access program for qualified clients to obtain needed legal services for civil issues.
• Students for Public Outreach and Civic Education, William S. Richardson School of Law
Continuation of programs that serve educational objectives to provide young adults with an understanding of the state court system and responsible citizenship principles
• Domestic Violence Action Center
Provision of needed outreach, educational and counseling services to victims.
• Hawaii Friends of Restorative Justice
Provision of legal services during incarceration and guidance to prepare women for release and community re-entry.
• First United Methodist Church (Oahu)
Provision of immigration legal services through clinics and selected direct representation cases.
• Hawaii Appleseed Center for Law and Economic Justice
Improve Hawaii’s children’s mental health system by ensuring compliance with Medicaid’s Early Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment requirements.
