Alzheimer’s Association offering lecture series in Hilo

The Alzheimer’s Association will present a series of lectures during three Saturdays in August at the Aging and Disability Resource Center, 1055 Kinoole St., in Hilo.

The series begins at 1 p.m. Aug. 6 with the first topic “What Is Dementia,” a workshop that reviews dementia, its symptoms, warning signs, misconceptions and potential treatments. The presentation includes short videos of people with the disease, family members of individuals with dementia and various professionals.

The movie “Age Old Friends” will be shown at 3 p.m.

At 5 p.m., the Alzheimer’s Association will begin the first of a three-part “Living with Forgetfulness” series for anyone who is forgetful along with their family members. Attendees do not have to have a diagnosis to attend. The program is titled “Living with Alzheimer’s.”

On Aug. 13, the topic will be “Legal Aspects in Dementia.” This 1 p.m. workshop provides information about advance directives, various legal documents and planning strategies. The movie “A Song for Martin” will be shown at 3 p.m. and part two of “Living with Forgetfulness” begins at 5 p.m.

On Aug. 20, the topics will be “Communications in Dementia” and “Challenging Behaviors in Dementia.” This workshop covers information about communication and possible causes and types of behaviors that might arise during the course of dementia as well as potential interventions.

The movie “Memories of Tomorrow” will be shown at 3 p.m. and part three of “Living with Forgetfulness” begins at 5 p.m.
