During the week of July 11-17, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three of the drivers were younger than 21.

During the week of July 11-17, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three of the drivers were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; Puna, five; South Hilo, three; and South Kohala, two.

So far this year, there have been 591 DUI arrests compared to 540 during the same period last year, an increase of 9.4 percent.

There have been 778 major accidents so far this year compared to 829 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.2 percent.

So far this year, there have been 11 official fatal crashes, one with multiple deaths, resulting in 12 official fatalities, compared with 10 official fatal crashes, two with multiple deaths, resulting in 13 official fatalities during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 10 percent for fatal crashes, and a decrease of 7.7 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
