The Hilo Orchid Society awarded its Orchid Isle Award for 2016 to the Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club.

The annual award is given to the person or organization that has done the most to promote Hawaii Island as the Orchid Isle by placing orchids where people can see and enjoy them.

Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club members created an orchid grotto at the Daifukuji Soto Mission, and they placed orchids in West Hawaii locations including the Outrigger Kanaloa Resort, Greenwell Coffee Farm and Kona Community Hospital.

The award was presented June 3 at the Hilo Orchid Show. Joyce Hancock accepted the award on behalf of the Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club, which was presented by Hilo Orchid Society President Rick Kelley.

The Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club is hosting its 34th annual Orchid Show and Sale from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. July 17 at the Daifukuji Soto Mission. Kona Daifukuji Taiko will perform at 10 a.m. and light refreshments will be served. Admission is free.

The mission is located at 79-7241 Mamalahoa Highway, just after Teshima’s Restaurant in Honalo.
