Coach Chris Leonard has gotten just about what he expected from the two Pilipaa club teams he took to the AAU girls junior national volleyball championships in Orlando, Florida.

“Both teams have looked outstanding at times but have made their share of mistakes,” he said.

In addition to being undersized, both squads are young relative to the competition.

The Pilipaa 16s only have two 16-year-olds, while the Pilipaa 15s, with only one 15-year-old on their roster, have two players who are going into the eighth grade.

“That’s what it’s all about, getting the girls a challenge,” Leonard said. “The girls have learned that we need to work on being more consistent and confident, and that will come with time and more experiences like these.”

The 16s finished with a 2-1 record on Saturday and are 4-5 heading into the final day of the tournament Sunday.

Earlier, the 15s finished 60th out of 173 teams.

“I’m proud of these girls and look forward to watching them play in the fall for their respective high school teams,” Leonard said on Pilipaa.com.
