The Volcano Art Center’s 2016 Hula Kahiko series continues from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday with a performance by hula practitioner Noe Noe Kekaualua and ohana.

Born and raised in Hilo, Kekaualua has a love and passion for Hawaiian culture that has taken her around the world. She began studying the art of hula at age 4 and has been engaged in it since.

This performance is part of a year-round series sponsored by the Volcano Art Center. For the series, hula halau from throughout Hawaii are invited to perform each month in a one-of-a-kind outdoor setting on the kahua hula (platform) at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. These performances are presented authentically in an outdoor setting, rain or shine, without electronic amplification. Audience members are encouraged to bring sun/rain gear and sitting mats.

Taking place in conjunction with the Hula Kahiko performances, the public is invited to join Native Hawaiian culture specialist Loke Kamanu and her ohana as they set up shop from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on the lanai of the Volcano Art Gallery.

Presenting a lovely display of “Na Mea Hula” (all things hula), Kamanu will share a variety of instruments, implements and lei styles that play an integral role in the life of the hula practitioner. This is a hands-on and family friends demonstration that is sure to be memorable.

These events are free to attend, but national park fees apply.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication or a modification of policies and procedures to participate in this event should contact Desiree at 987-7288 or email volcanohula@gmail.com as soon as possible.
