On May 6, Wailoa Center held back the crowds on opening night of the 10 x 10 x 10 Artist Challenge until the artists were introduced by Wailoa director Codie King and exhibit co-coordinator Kaori Ukaji.

After a few minutes of discussing the exhibit’s background and introductions, the crowd dispersed upstairs to view 10 art installations by 10 artists using 10 mandatory materials. Through the course of the evening, more than 350 visitors seemed intrigued by the concept and the way each artist interpreted the challenge.

“Art for art’s sake is truly evident in each artist’s use of space, which each had been given one year to plan,” King said. “The art enthusiasts enjoyed meeting and talking to the artists throughout the evening.”

The artists showing their installations are Michael Cromwell, Bob Douglas, Joe Hampton, Ben Krome, Stephen Lang, Jim Rhodes, Joseph Ruesing, Trudee Siemann, King and Ukaji.

The only materials they could use besides one of their own choosing were a light source, toilet paper, wire mesh, wooden pallets, plastic wrap, paint, canvas, plaster and any type of fastener that holds one material to another.

The 10 x 10 x 10 Artist Challenge exhibit will be open through May 26.
