Raised in Hilo and a 1951 Hilo High School graduate, I have climbed Mauna Kea many times, before any telescopes were present, and I was amazed at the clarity of the night sky, thinking at the time: What a wonderful place for an observatory.
This has all come to pass, and now we have the opportunity to extend the limits of our understanding of the universe with the construction and use of this advanced, new instrument (Thirty Meter Telescope) without disturbing the cultural aspects of the great white mountain.
Who could object?
The Hawaiian Nation (and I have many Hawaiian relatives residing in Hilo and abroad) are to be complimented for sharing this sacred and wonderful site with the rest of the world
I long to see the fruition of this project, and hope I have the opportunity to observe the benefits it brings to the Big Island and the honor to all Hawaii.

Internationally recognized diabetes researcher and professor emeritus Dr. Wilfred Fujimoto honored the Hilo community with his talk about diabetes Feb. 24.
He spoke at the Hilo Medical Center to a well-attended audience, many of whom had previous diabetes education classes. That the information was insightful, helpful and easily understood was evidenced by the numerous questions for additional information, going beyond what he talked about.
This was the first of a two-part series, the next scheduled for April 13.
Fujimoto was born and raised in Hilo (he stated his family owned and operated Fujimoto Trading Co.), went on to medical school on the mainland and served as a professor of medicine at the University of Washington.
Although “retired,” he continues to serve as a visiting professor at the University Saitama Medical Center near Tokyo. He’s a member of the ADA’s Asian Pacific American Diabetes Action Council and on the advisory board of the ADA’s Hawaii office. His primary interest is related to diabetes in Asians (in Hawaii and abroad).
We are very fortunate to have Fujimoto share his expertise and look forward to his next presentation. A heartfelt thanks to this great doctor.
