Boys &Girls Club of the Big Island invites the community to its 2016 Youth of the Year Banquet fundraiser starting at 5:30 p.m. March 11 at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.

The Youth of the Year program, Boys &Girls Club of America’s premier youth recognition event, promotes and celebrates service to club, community and family; academic performance; moral character; life goals; and poise and public speaking ability.

This year’s candidates are Jordyn Alexandra Brooks-Mathew, 14, from Pahoa and Nicholas Miguel, 18, from Hilo. Along with awarding the Big Island Youth of the Year, BGCBI will honor community supporters who have been instrumental in the clubs’ success, including Newton J. Chu as Honoree of the Year.

Chu, of the law firm Torkildson, Katz, Moore, Hetherington &Harris, is a BGCBI board member emeritus and Hawaii Island director. He has been instrumental in the overall success of the club and has energized numerous BGCBI functions while serving as master of ceremonies.

The Puna and Waiakea Lions clubs were named Champions for Youth. Both Lions clubs have supported BGCBI by voluntarily providing mentoring, equipment, funds and many hours of skilled labor to improve and upkeep BGCBI Club locations around the island.

The trustees of the Hilo Boarding School will receive the Foundation Award. The “Hilo Boys Club” started as a program of the Hilo Boarding School Trust in 1952. In the years since, the trustees of the Hilo Boarding School have remained strong supporters of the club and Big Island youth.

Reservations are required for the Youth of the Year Banquet with individual and group seating packages. For more information, visit www.bgcbi.com, call 961-5536 or email gail@bgcbi.org
