Ohio glass blower and installation artist Darren Goodman is visiting the Big Island during an extended artist-in-residence program through March 2016.
His opening exhibition, “Trail of Tears,” explores the journey Goodman has made traveling from Ohio to Europe, back across the mainland to Hawaii, creating his glass installations along the way.
Recently, Goodman installed a major permanent display of his glass tears at the new Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center where he engaged schoolchildren to paint on his glass creations.
Goodman came to Hawaii last year and did a similar project with Mountain View Elementary School and Volcano School of Arts and Sciences by blowing glass in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park then having the children help decorate the glass tears.
As part of his artist-in-residency, Goodman installed “Trail of Tears” at the Hawaii Museum of Contemporary Art in Hilo.
On Dec. 5, he gave a lecture about bringing glass blowing out of the traditional studio and into public schools using his portable glass furnace he designed that can fit into a backpack and be taken anywhere.
