Inspired by Maurice Sendak’s classic story “Where the Wild Things Are,” Gerald Lucena, a designer of sets, props and costumes for Aloha Performing Arts Company, will lead a winter workshop for children ages 8-12.
The workshop, which will take place at the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu, is scheduled for 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on six days: Dec. 21-23 and 28-30. Tuition is $175, which includes all materials needed for the workshop. Students must bring a lunch each day. An afternoon snack will be provided.
Students will create their own unique “wild thing” puppet, using simple materials such as recycled fabric, plaster cloth, dowels and glue, focusing on form, texture, facial expression and costumes as well as character movement and voice experimentation. Puppet possibilities include Hawaiian animals such as the puaa, pueo and io. Students will have an opportunity to perform with their creations on the last day of the workshop.
Lucena recently was presented the Luna Award for long-term service and dedication to APAC. He received his degree in fine arts from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He currently is a regular instructor at Donkey Mill Art Center.
The “Where the Wilds Things Are” workshop is limited to 12 students. Early online registration at apachawaii.org is recommended.
