A stabbing Wednesday evening in lower Puna has left one man in the hospital and another in police custody.

Officers responding to an 8:15 p.m. call learned two men had been arguing outside a home on the 13-800 block of Pohoiki Road when the confrontation turned physical.

The victim, a 24-year-old Pahoa man, was stabbed multiple times. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he remained Thursday in serious but stable condition.

During the confrontation, another resident of the house intervened, causing minor injuries to the suspect’s head.

Boris Yarmolyk, 61, of Pahoa, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of first-degree assault. Fire Department paramedics treated him at the scene for his injury before police took him to the Hilo cellblock.

Charges had not been filed and detectives continued to investigate as of late Thursday afternoon.
